What is Underlayment?

An underlayment is a sheet material commonly used in a steep-slope roof construction. It is typically produced from a combination of asphalt and a base sheet of felt or other inorganic material.  An underlayment performs several functions, such as:

  • Temporary weather protection until a roof covering is installed
  • A secondary weatherproofing layer
  • Separation between a roof covering and a substrate
